Why We Only Work With Trade Businesses (And What Six Trades Taught Us About Local SEO)

Most agencies will work with anyone who pays. We deliberately don’t. Here’s why narrowing down to trade businesses made us better at the job, and what six very different trades have each taught us about winning local search.

There’s a version of this agency that takes on any client with a pulse and a budget. A dentist one week, a law firm the next, an e-commerce shop after that. It’s the default way most agencies operate, and it’s exactly the way we chose not to.

I spent years building and selling trade businesses of my own, grown entirely through organic search, before I ever ran an agency. So when we niched down to trade and service businesses, it wasn’t a marketing decision. It was going back to the thing I actually understood from the inside. Eighteen years in, that focus has turned out to be the single biggest reason our clients rank where they do.

The case for specialising isn’t really an argument you can make in the abstract. It’s something you see in the detail, in how differently the same core discipline has to be applied from one trade to the next. So here it is, told through what each trade has actually taught us.

Oven Cleaning

Rankings, held properly, last for years

Oven Craft in Cardiff has held the #1 position in South Wales for oven cleaning for over a decade. Along the way they’ve built more than 300 five-star reviews and filled their diary without ever spending a penny on advertising. It’s the clearest example we have of what local SEO looks like when it’s done properly and then simply maintained.

Here’s what most people misunderstand about a result like that. They assume the hard part was getting to #1. It wasn’t. The hard part, the part almost everyone gives up on, is the unglamorous monthly work that keeps you there: responding to every review, keeping the Google Business Profile active, publishing content, staying consistent for years after the initial excitement has worn off. Most businesses treat SEO like a project with an end date. Oven Craft treated it like brushing your teeth.

The transferable principle: a ranking won properly and maintained consistently becomes almost impossible for a competitor to take back. Local SEO isn’t a campaign you run once. It’s an asset that compounds, but only if you keep feeding it.

Scaffolding

You can go from nothing to #1, faster than you’d think

Bridgend Scaffolding came to us with no website and no online presence at all. Not a dated site that needed improving, nothing. For a lot of agencies that’s a red flag. For us it was the opposite: a completely blank slate, with none of the technical baggage that slows established businesses down.

We built their first website and their local SEO together, as one connected system rather than two separate jobs, and structured everything around how scaffolding customers actually search, usually under time pressure, often on a phone, needing to know quickly that you’re local, insured and available. They now hold #1 on both Google Maps and organic search for scaffolding in their area.

The transferable principle: starting from zero isn’t a disadvantage. Done right from day one, a business with no baggage can move faster than an established competitor sitting on a site that’s actively working against them.

Leather Repair

In a small niche, the first mover wins for a long time

Classic Leather Care went from no online presence to #1 in South Wales for leather repair in under 12 months, with a review count that now sits at roughly five times their nearest competitor’s. Leather repair is a low-volume, specialist niche, the kind of trade that doesn’t get searched for often, but when it does, the person searching is usually about to hand over something expensive or sentimental to a stranger.

That combination, low search volume and high trust stakes, changes the whole strategy. There’s no point chasing huge traffic numbers that don’t exist. The entire game is being the one business that looks unmistakably more trustworthy than the handful of alternatives, and getting there before anyone else bothers to. Once that review gap opens up, it’s very hard for a competitor to justify the effort of closing it.

The transferable principle: low competition rewards the business that moves first and punishes the one that waits. In a small niche, building real authority early means holding it for years.

Rug Cleaning

Positioning beats generic ranking

The Rug Laundry operates in an awkward space. Most of their “competitors” aren’t really rug specialists at all, they’re carpet cleaners who also do rugs as a side service. On the surface that looks like more competition. In practice, it’s an opportunity, but only if your online presence makes the distinction obvious.

We built their visibility around the specialist angle deliberately: the dedicated wash facility, the process, the range of rug types handled, the expertise a generalist with a portable machine simply can’t offer. Rather than fighting for the same generic “rug cleaning near me” searches on the same terms as everyone else, the strategy was to make it clear they weren’t the same kind of business at all. They now rank across Wales and into multiple UK cities, pulling customers willing to travel for a genuine specialist.

The transferable principle: ranking for generic terms is worth far less than ranking as the obvious specialist. Who you are, and how clearly you communicate it, matters as much as what you rank for.

Wood Floor Sanding

Credentials, made visible, justify a premium

Fresh Floors are PST Certified by Lägler, genuinely premium, dust-controlled floor sanding, the real thing, not a general handyman with a hired machine. But their old website didn’t show any of that. As a result they were being compared on price against people cutting corners, which is the worst possible position for a quality operator to be in.

The fix wasn’t really an SEO problem in the traditional sense, it was a positioning problem that SEO and web design had to solve together. We rebuilt the site so the credentials, the certification, the process, the dust control, were impossible to miss, and structured the content so search engines understood exactly what set them apart. They now rank #1 for floor sanding in Bridgend, and just as importantly, they rank for the kind of customer who cares about doing it properly.

The transferable principle: for premium trades, the job isn’t just visibility. It’s making sure the right customer understands why you cost more before they ever see a quote, otherwise you’re just the expensive option on a list.

Carpet Cleaning

Reviews and consistency are the whole game

Carpet cleaning is one of the most review-driven trades there is. When someone’s got a stained carpet or a house move coming up, they open Google Maps, glance at the top few results, and decide, often within a minute, based almost entirely on review count, rating and how recent the reviews are. There’s very little browsing and very little loyalty. It’s a snap judgement.

That makes the day-to-day fundamentals disproportionately important. A well-managed Google Business Profile and a steady, ongoing stream of genuine reviews do more heavy lifting here than clever technical tricks ever could. It’s not glamorous work, and it’s exactly the work most businesses quietly stop doing after the first couple of months, which is precisely why staying consistent is such an advantage.

The transferable principle: the unglamorous fundamentals, reviews, profile management, consistency, decide more outcomes than anything else. The advantage goes to whoever keeps doing them after everyone else has stopped.

Why the specialisation actually matters to you

Notice what those six lessons have in common: none of them are generic. A scaffolder starting from zero needs a completely different plan to a decade-old oven cleaning business defending its position, which needs a different plan again to a premium floor sander fighting price competition, which is different again to a carpet cleaner living or dying by review velocity.

A generalist agency juggling a dentist, a law firm and a plumber in the same week can’t hold all of that nuance in their head, so they don’t try. They apply one templated process to everyone and hope it lands. Sometimes it does. Often it quietly wastes your money on the wrong priorities for your specific trade.

Because we only work with trades, we’ve seen these patterns play out enough times to know what actually moves the needle in each situation, and, just as importantly, what’s a waste of your budget. That isn’t something you can fake with a broad client list. It comes from doing the same kind of work, in the same kinds of businesses, over and over, until you know it cold.

We’ve never spent a penny on ads. The diary stays full because we own our rankings, not because we’re renting a lead every month. Oven Craft, Cardiff

We’re actively extending the same system into more trades now, plumbing, electrical work and window cleaning among them. We’re upfront that these are newer for us, with case studies still building, but the underlying method is the one proven across the trades above. If your trade isn’t listed yet, it’s often still a fit: the fundamentals of local search don’t change much from one trade to the next. What changes is how you apply them, and applying them well is the entire point of specialising.

If you want the fuller picture of how we think about all of this, our SEO for trades and web design for trades pages break down the whole approach, trade by trade.

Is your trade a fit?

We work with a small number of trade businesses at a time, and only one per trade in each area. If your patch is open, let’s have an honest conversation about what’s possible.
