The story behind the advice
Experience earned in the day-to-day reality of business.
Melissa’s business experience was not built in a boardroom. It was built through customers, staff, vans, premises, cash flow, growth problems and difficult decisions.
In 2010, Melissa founded Edwards Jeffery with a £5,000 bank loan. What began as a small carpet and upholstery cleaning business developed into a nationally recognised operation with four vans, commercial premises, specialist rug-cleaning facilities, a training centre and a team of four.
The company won first place nationally in the Local & Loved Awards and was successfully sold after eight years.
After the sale, Melissa went on to establish Classic Leather Care and The Leather Academy, building further specialist services and helping other business owners develop valuable technical skills and new income streams.
Four vans
A service business expanded beyond the owner into a working team and larger operation.
Premises and facilities
Commercial premises, specialist rug-cleaning facilities and a training centre built around the core service.
Business sold
The company was built into an operation with value beyond Melissa’s own labour, then successfully sold.
Why that experience matters
Advice shaped by consequences, not theory.
Melissa understands the difference between a business that looks busy and one that is genuinely profitable.
She knows what it feels like when every decision still lands with the owner, when growth creates more pressure than freedom and when a promising opportunity also brings operational risk.
She also understands the decisions that turn a self-employed role into a stronger business: pricing properly, choosing the right work, building systems, improving the customer journey, delegating responsibility and making the company less dependent on one person.
The aim is not to make every business larger. It is to help the owner build the business they actually want.
How Melissa works
Honest questions. Clear priorities. Practical next steps.
Understand the business
Where the work comes from, which services matter, how the owner spends their time and what currently feels difficult.
Find the real constraint
The problem may be visibility, pricing, positioning, conversion, capacity, systems or owner dependence.
Decide what comes first
Not every issue needs to be fixed at once. The focus is placed on the changes most likely to help now.
Put the plan into action
Where digital work is part of the answer, David and the Local Edge Digital team can deliver it.
